Published by Jammy Sinclair on July 30, 2009my daughter is 32 months old and she can say mama dada hi bye sissy shoe no cheese and some other words. i know that she should be saying alot more by now but has anyone went through this and when will she start talking? i get her whatever she points to when she wants it but is there things that i can start doing to make her talk more. she is the first born and her sister is only 7 months so isn’t cant learn from her
Talk to your pediatrician and rule out hearing problems. Some children are just late talkers.

Ask her questions. LOTS of questions. See if she follows directions or doesn’t. If you’re worried you should talk to your doctor. She should be saying more, but maybe just isn’t a big talker.

if you keep getting whatever she wants your going to be an un happy mother when she is two or three. she will be the biggest crier in the world if you don’t stop now.
plus she ll talk more of why she wants that and that, etc….

i watched a girl who was the exact same way…i finally got tired of trying to figure out what she wanted and used flash cards. also, if she wanted something, i’d say, do you want cheese? she would nod, so i would ask her to say cheese. eventually she started picking up the words and talked a lot more. now she is five and sounds like a dictionary when she talks! you just have to be really patient and work with her every day…i would set aside an hour each day, like during your young one’s naptime, and just help her out. i was blessed with a vtech computer, and it’s helped my 2 year old out a lot…if you can afford it, that would be a great learning tool, even in the future.
hope that helps out!

dont give her things when she points make her tell you what she wants if you have to tell her what it is and let her repeat it thats what we had to do for my son i didnt think he was ever going to talk because i never made him i did the exact same thing you are doing now.

She is almost 3 and your ped hasn’t been concerned? My son is language delayed and he was referred at 2 and is now in therapy. Call your ped and make an appt to get her a referral to have her evaluated. And still if you mistyped and she is 23 months old she should still be evaluated by a professional therapist. THere are programs in most states that provide free or low cost therapy if money is an issue, we don’t pay anything because it is a state run program that my son is in. He just turned two and says many more words than what you say your daughter does and he was still admitted.

I’d have her doctor check her ears and evaluate her. The Blake foundation also can evaluate her and if she needs speech therapy they will do it at your house, based on your income.
If everything is ok, I’d start with not giving her everything, make her ask for things. My son is 2 1/2 and isn’t speaking well. He is around other children, not in daycare, though. We taught him sign language, which has helped him gain some confidence. Now we make him say the word if he signs it. Good luck, I know its worrisome when you think your child isn’t where they should be.

call your local early intervention program tomorrow and ask for her to be evaluated. By 36 months old she should have several hundred words she can say, and be speaking in sentences. If she is too old for the early intervention program, she can be evaluated by the special needs program at your local elementary school. Once she starts therapy I bet she will start speaking quickly.
