Should my 19 months old be speaking some sentences?
Published by Jammy Sinclair on October 29, 2009Hi, my 19 month old son can say words he says ball, star, mummy, dada, paper, barnaby bear, lola, pipin, flower, tree, bee, byebye, go, bottle, chair, bubbles, din dins, bag, book, man, tractor, shoe and door.
He repeats the odd word after i say it too but i was just wondering if he should be saying more words and maybe putting sentences together?
And yes before you say it i know all children develop and different speeds and every child is different etc etc but just a rough guidline would help im a first time mum and dont have my parents around for advice and im only 20 and none of my friends have children either. Thanks
According to "What to Expect the Toddler Years", a 22 month old (I don’t know what it says about 19 months) should be speaking 6 words. Some speak more than this and some less, but this is a general guideline that lets you know when/if you need to worry. If you are still concerned, speak to your doctor at your next appointment.

Well he is certainly building up a good vocabulary, so I shouldn’t worry too much if I were you. Before long he will start on small sentences but he has to hear small sentences -three word sentences– building up- being spoken to him too.

in my daughters health book it says a 2 year old should say at least 20 words and some say over 50. My daughter is 21 months and she can say about 30 words now. Trust me when i say about 2 months ago i was stressing about her not reaching 20 words by 2 but in the last 2 months she is saying so many new words. My health nurse said most of their language development is between 18 and 24 months so be prepared to hear a lot more from her in the next few months. I think 19 months is a little young to be talking in sentences as this normally happens around 2 even though there are some exceptions.

I think vocabulary wise he is doing OK, but I think he should be saying more 2 word phrases ( "mommy car" "want milk" etc) It sure would not hurt to ask for a speech evaluation to be done on him.
I just went through having my youngest son diagnosed with a speech delay. When he was that age he only said about 10 words, and he was very frustrated too. Here in the US there is a program called early intervention that is designed to help make sure kids are not too far behind. In the UK I believe that you can ask your health visitor to set it up. My son got 9 months of free therapy through early intervention and they helped get him into special needs preschool. He is just 39 months old and has pretty much been "cured" of his speech delay. This is amazing since a year ago he had a 12 month delay ( speaking at a 15 month level at 27 months old).

My son is just now 20 months old and he speaks 2-4 word sentences, he started around 18-19 months old. He’ll say, "I miss you" "What is that?" "Tigger is funny" "Oh no, what happened?" things like that but he also has a very extensive vocabulary. I would not be concerned if he isn’t speaking sentences yet, sounds like from his vocabulary that he’ll be doing so very shortly.
