what should my child be sayin at 18 months old?
Published by Jammy Sinclair on November 23, 2009hi all my son is 18 months old and i was wondering how is speech should be coming along as he doesnt really say anything yet . he says mam mam and dada and is constantly sayin hiyaaa and he can say book and spoon but wont say them unless i say to him say book or lets go get a spoon and he says juice sometimes too. he understands everything i say tho . if i say go get yr shoes and coat he will get them , go get mammy a nappy and your wipes he wil get them or go get mammy remote, ball, book. anything i say go get he will understand . i just cant get him to say many words should i be worried or how can i encourage him to say words
Instead of telling him what to get, maybe you want to pick it up and ask him what it is? Just an idea for him to try to talk more.
My daughter is 18 months and this is what she says on a daily basis:
the ABC song
counts to 10
Thank You
All of our dogs names
No (her favorite, haha!)
Wow!
Sings parts of songs, clearly
Mine
Daddy, dada
Mommy, mama
Dog
Elmo
What
Huh?
…and that is all I can think of right now. But she does talk a lot and quite clearly. She isn’t as good about getting stuff as your son, though. I could say "go get the book" and only 1/2 the time she’d do it. That’s that part where each child hits their milestones at different ages. No need to worry, I think he’s probably on track. Right now, my daughter also says a lot of mumbo jumbo and says it so confidently…can’t wait to figure out what she is saying!

he’s normal. Babies dont develop the bulk of their verbal skills until 2-3.
He’s communicating, and thats what you want.
They learn by hearing you talk, and by you repeating what they say.

at 18 months your son should be able to rap the theme song from the fresh prince of bel air

They understand a lot more than they say at this age. He sounds perfectly normal to me.

make it a game or song.
my 16 month old daughter loves music so we sing about everything
yeah i have no talent but she loves it and she is learning
just take a song like itsy bitsy spider or twinkle twinkle little star and add your own words
he will catch on
my daughter only says a few words but she is trying more
ask your doctor if you are really concerned

what your child says depends on what he hears and is taught! read simple books and point out objects he sees everyday, converse with him and give him a chance to answer back, even if it is gibberish, it’s still a response. dont worry too much about the amt of words at this age. the "norm" I think, is like 8. I had to fill out a questionairre at my sons 18 month checkup and at the time he didnt say 8 plus words and the pediatrician referred us to a speech therapist because she is very chart-dependant. a few days later my son said 2 new words making the total 9. Toddlers will talk when they are ready! sometimes they prefer to listen and take it all in, while they play with their toys lol

my daughter can say 50 words and shes 17 months.and shes starting to put words together..but he will come around and be talking before you know it

he sounds normal. my son is 14 months and says about 8-10 words but he is verrryyy talkitive, i think its just his personality. my friend has a son who is 17 months, they know he CAN say a few different words but he is just not as talkitive. I wouldnt be worried he is still very young.

My son is almost 17 months old and he’s just the same. He says cheers, door (though he may mean dog - we’re not quite sure), shoes and sort of sing Balamory , though mainly he just grunts and points until he gets what he wants! As long as you’re talking to him
