Do you need the nike shoes in order to use the nike sportsband watch?

No, you just need the Nike+ sensor and a safe way to keep it attached to your shoe, the shoe just has a cradle for the sensor.

No. You can buy a pouch for the sensor and attach it to your laces instead. The shoes just have a pocket in the sole for it instead.
